Breaking the Silence: Menstrual Hygiene Awareness in Rural Schools

In many rural communities across India, menstruation is still met with silence, shame, and misinformation. Girls miss school during their periods — not always because they're unwell, but because they lack the products, the privacy, or simply the confidence to manage it without embarrassment. Left unaddressed, that silence compounds: missed classes become missed opportunities, and misinformation passed between friends fills the gap that health education should.

Taking the conversation where it's needed

HealHerSoul's Community Outreach team takes menstrual health education directly into rural classrooms, delivered in the local language by facilitators girls can trust. Sessions are built to be practical, not clinical — covering the basics of the menstrual cycle, safe hygiene practices, and a candid myth-busting segment addressing the misconceptions that circulate in many communities.

Awareness paired with access

Understanding alone isn't enough if a girl still can't act on it. Every session is paired with the distribution of sanitary hygiene kits, so that awareness comes with the means to actually manage her health with dignity — not just the theory of it.

What we've reached so far

Since the campaign began, HealHerSoul has run sessions in more than 120 rural schools across over 18 districts, reaching more than 10,000 girls with menstrual health education and distributing over 25,000 hygiene kits. Each session also includes an open Q&A, and where possible, a short orientation for teachers and parents — because the silence this campaign is breaking doesn't live in classrooms alone.

What changes when the silence breaks

Teachers report girls asking questions openly in class instead of avoiding the topic altogether. Attendance during menstruation improves. And perhaps most importantly, girls leave these sessions understanding that their bodies are not something to be ashamed of — a shift that outlasts any single school year.
